The Go! Team covering Sonic Youth - Bull In The Heather. Awesomeness all around.
If you can’t answer the question “what am I going to do today better than I did yesterday?” you should go back to bed. Seriously. The only way to improve day over day is to focus on specific obstacles and barriers to overcome.
Settling into a groove and just doing enough is easy. Anyone can do that. Improving yourself and in turn improving the world - now that’s something worthy no matter how small the goal may be.
A goal may appear aggressive or daunting but when broken down into manageable pieces it can be achievable. What are some of the aggressive goals that you set for yourself and how do you plan on achieving them?
Creativity seems to be the “buzz word” of the 2000s. Society values it, companies need it, and employers want it. Or do they? What society claims to want and what is actually rewarded in practice are two different things. We claim to want innovation, but are innovation and creativity actually encouraged, or even allowed in most environments? What types of creative behaviors are rewarded by society, and what types are punished?
This has been one of the most productive spring cleanings of my life.
- I’ve cleared out and donated 7 bags of old clothing that I no longer wear.
- I’ve donated 4 bags of books to the Toronto Public Library.
- Every Christmas my mom buys me and my wife tons of toiletries. Don’t ask. Seriously. It’s accumulated to the point where I have more shampoo than Shoppers Drug Mart in my closet. Hey guess what? I’ve given them to the Covenant House. At least someone will be using them.
I’m not asking for a reward nor am I doing it for bragging rights. The reward is how unburdened I feel afterwards. Sometimes it just feels great to let go of things instead of just accumulating mindlessly.
Next up: finding a place to recycle my old wireless router, computer, and an old 15” LCD monitor.
One of the major areas that I want to focus really hard on for the next little while is the topic of personal growth. There are many key areas that I think I need a lot of improvement in. As such, these will be my main focus during my non-working hours:
- Physical. Everyone says they should exercise more but that’s not a real goal. One of my personal goals is to become the most physically fit in my life. I realize that to do this I’ll need to be more conscious about what I consume and I need to have a good mix of cardio / yoga / weight training. The biggest obstacle to overcome is pushing my body to the limits and mixing it enough to keep it challenging - two things I really need to force myself to do.
- Mental. Doing relaxation techniques and making time for yoga. I was doing a good job of this for the first two months of the year, but ever since I returned from Peru I’ve been slacking more that I care to admit. I’ve also learned that as a natural introvert, I need a lot of alone time at the end of the day just to reflect and unwind. You can’t always change who you are so you just have to go with the flow.
- Professional. One of the things I’m doing is going through this list of reading material from the Personal MBA website. I don’t plan on owning ALL these bookings so I’m going to use my good friend the Toronto Public Library. I realize that it’s not a substitute for a real MBA but I believe it is a good start to pave the way and learn some business fundamentals that I never learned in University. I still have a lot to learn in tech, but there’s no reason why business skills and tech have to be mutually exclusive. For example, there’s absolutely no reason why I don’t understand how to read a balance sheet.
The best part is that all these goals are not impossible to achieve. The biggest obstacles that could prevent me from achieving these are my own shortsightedness and complacency. By writing these goals down, I’m really hoping that it keeps me honest and it’ll give me something to reflect on later.
